Stepping Notes Music School

Stepping Notes Music School

The Stepping Notes Music School for the 2s to 8s is devised and taught by Nikhil Dally, and inspired by the philosophies and methods of Zoltan Kodály, Emile Jaques-Dalcroze and Géza Szilvay. It is the ideal way to help your children to develop a sensitive inner ear, discover and develop their singing voice, and acquire the musicianship skills necessary to start to read music and learn an instrument.

In Stepping Notes, children are invited into a stimulating environment defined by the symbolic use of colour, full of characters and exciting props, in which they become active participants through singing and natural movement.

  • To help children to develop a deep inner sensitivity to music: its rhythms, its phrasing, its structures, its harmonies and melodic patterns.
  • To provide sure foundations for musical literacy.
  • To tap into children’s innate creativity and imagination by means of music.
  • To help children preserve the physical flexibility and sensitivity which is essential for all good instrumental technique.
  • To introduce children, when appropriate, to the judicious and sensitive use of high-quality musical instruments.

Nikhil Dally received first-class honours in music from Cambridge University, and studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music. He is a professional composer and pianist, but devotes most of his time to music education work for children. He has taught composition and music theory at the London College of Music Junior Department. He has composed music to commissions from schools in Richmond and Hertfordshire. He has taught music workshops for the Orange Tree Theatre (Richmond), and has composed music for children in a production by the same theatre. He has taught Javanese gamelan to children of all ages, for the Royal Festival Hall, for Berkshire Young Musicians’ Trust and for Hertfordshire Music Service. He taught kindermusik in Kew Montessori School for 2˝ years and collaborated with dance teacher Maureen Murphy on the development of pre-school music-and-movement curricula.

He founded Stepping Notes in 1999, and the school now has about 100 students on its roll. Stepping Notes won the award for Best Local Activity with What’s On 4 Little Ones in 2008. Nikhil’s training courses for music teachers attract teachers from all over the world.

He is a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, the British Kodály Academy and the Dalcroze Society.
